The vision behind Summerfield

This is the first of two articles by The Courier regarding a proposed development called Summerfield based upon an interview with developer Mark Odachowski.

By this time virtually anyone living in Worcester County should be somewhat familiar with the name Summerfield. The magnitude of this proposed development adjacent to the present town of Snow Hill instantly grabs the attention. A total of 2,170 homes and supporting businesses is something that simply cannot be ignored. Intended for annexation to the town of Snow Hill the project stands to significantly increase the geographic size of the town and could nearly triple the existing population of 2,400 residents.

The Courier was fortunate to gain insight into the background and scope of the project from the source most intimately acquainted with Summerfield. Mark Odachowski, the man who envisioned and facilitated planning for a project that he affectionately refers to as “writing history” in Worcester County and possibly for the entire Eastern Shore.

Summerfield holds promise of historic charm

This is the second of two articles by The Courier regarding a proposed development called Summerfield based upon an interview with developer Mark Odachowski.
Last week’s edition of The Courier explored the man and the vision behind Summerfield, a proposed development totaling about 1,000 acres with 2,170 homes adjacent to the town of Snow Hill and under consideration for annexation by the town. Knowing a little about Mark Odachowski, the visionary and driving force behind the project, is essential to understanding how something of this magnitude has come into existence. He is young, passionate and expresses a deeply rooted affinity for both the town of Snow Hill and the people. All of these are likely essential ingredients to tackling a project of near record proportions in size for the Eastern Shore and in the intense attention to detail Summerfield will embody.

Maryland’s Eastern Shore has faced rapid growth in recent years. Over the last three decades, the Eastern Shore has experienced substantial losses in agricultural and forest lands, large increases in developed lands, worsening water quality, increased commuting times and distances and a growing population that has strained public services.

This nine county region is projected to grow by nearly 160,000 people over the next 25 years. If the Eastern Shore Region is to maintain its traditional landscape, vibrant communities and resource-based economies, visionary planning and land management must occur.
